Learning from History (or not): Civil Rights in Germany before and after 1945
Your Journey and Course Listing:
This course provides students an opportunity to strengthen values and abilities through a meaningful experiential faculty-led Service Learning Journey. Our service focus will be with led2serveU's long-term community partners at the Turkish Community Center. Along with the service projects, we will visit historical sites in Berlin, Munich, and Nuremberg that will allow us to investigate some of the race relations/civil rights in Germany, primarily those related to Nazis, the Holocaust, and the Cold War. Throughout our Journey a key focus will be reflection - reflection on the causes of social problems, on possible resolutions to these problems (and why these possible resolutions have not been implemented and what it would take to implement them), and reflection on what we have learned from our service learning journey and historical inquiry in Germany.
Projects and Partners:
While in Berlin, you will stay in a quaint guest house on the south side of the city. You will be near Potsdamer Platz, Humboldt, Museum Island and many other historical attractions. The location is convenient to all of our community service partners. During your time in Munich, we will stay just inside the city, at a hotel which keeps you close enough to explore everything this city has to offer.
Travel Information, Deposit, Team meetings:
You will fly from Kansas City or Wichita (TBD) to Berlin. From there, we will explore and train to Leipzig and then Munich. You will have maps and information for each city. Full details about this Service Learning Journey will be provided in a journey packet which you will receive prior to your depature.
A $500.00 deposit is due upon registration no later than November 1, 2014. An additional payment of $1000.00 is due on or before December 1, 2014. Remaining balance is due on or before January 1, 2015.
