Training for the Gold
Exclusively offered at Kansas Wesleyan University, we offer a 3 credit Service Learning Course. This will be course listed as Special Topics 286.
Enjoy learning course content while you are walking the halls of the World's #1 Sports University! This course is an extension of Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, & Motor Behavior. The course will provide the unique opportunity for the KWU student to travel, study, and serve abroad. The students will participate in various activities while examining the distinct approaches to increase peak performance of elite athletes. During the course, students will collaborate with German students and professors on sport related projects. Also, students will be involved in a meaningful service learning project at an elementary school in the city of Cologne, Germany.
Course corequisites or prerequisites: Students must have taken at least one of the following courses: SPES 443, Kinesiology; SPES 380 Physiology of Exercise; or SPES 341Intro to Motor Behavior
You will engage in ongoing service projects with our community partner schools while you gain a new perspective about the lives of others. Depending on the premier sport schedules, you may attend an elite soccer game, swim championship or other sporting event. In Cologne, you will see and experience the culture, the people, and the land and develop a deeper appreciation of what it means to be a global citizen. Also, this is a great location to create an internship that will allow you to dive into a vibrant culture rich with history, knowledge and beauty. Come and see the sights and sounds of one of the most historical and life-changing areas of the world!
Projects and Partners:
We will support several partner schools and communities in Cologne and her surrounding regions. This Journey will be customized so that your projects are directly linked to your area of study or interest. Key projects that are planned include designing a brain-based learning playground, music and reading lessons, robotics sessions and other collaborative undertakings. All of the details, logistics and programs will be planned in advance for you. We will create an experience that you will remember forever because you had the chance to understand more and make a difference in the lives of others.
Lodging and Tours:
During your week in Cologne, we will stay just inside the city, keeping you close enough to explore the Dom, Bridge of Locks, Olympic Museum and everything else this city has to offer. While traveling across Germany, you will have many opportunities to see famous landmarks, visit museums, discover castles, attend sports events, take day excursions into tons of other countries and many other highlights.
All of your travel details will be planned in advance. You will have maps for each city. Full details about this Service Learning Journey will be provided in a journey packet which you will receive prior to your depature.
Financial Aid and Registration:
. Your initial deposit of $500.00 is due no later than November 1, 2014. Please register for your class with The Registrar office at KWU (and your advisor).
Journey Cost: $3950.00

Dr. Cummings will support this course and travel wtih Professor Minnich and his team into Cologne, the Sports University and other partner locations.
